should I have a mamogram??????

Hello everyone,

    I am new to this site, but not new to Gynecomastia, I have had it for a few years, and so far I have not went to any specialist, just my family doctor and she confirmed that I have Gynecomastia, with lots of breast tissue and fat, Lets just say a D cup size compared to my wifes D cup, well my doctor has not told me to get a mammogram, so I was wondering how you know if you should or not!  Oh by the way I contracted Gyno after being overdosed on steroids by a doctor, that was for my back after a car wreck.

Hmmm, steroids for back pain? Go figuure huh.... 

As for the mammogram, why bother? Unless you have a lump or something else inside your breasts that you need to look at/detect, there's not much point imo. If your m(o)(o)bs bother you, get them lopped off and be done with it.

BTW, are you still taking the steroids for you back. If not, how long has it been since you have taken the meds?

 The mamogram won't be a means to resolving the gynecomastia. The gyne is a mixture of fatty tissue and glandular tissue. The exact ratio of fat to gland won't be realized until a surgeon gets in there. Imaging can miss the difuse glandular fingers thru the fatty tissue. And I don't know what you would profit by having a mammogram.

I would visit a good plastic surgeon and skip the rest. The surgeon is the one who can help you. Although you might want to get your hormones checked to be sure there isn't still an ongoing imbalance.

A Male Chest Mammogram is a special X-ray that shows fat vs. gland.  Not all mammography centers know how to perform this test on men well.  I prefer to examine my patients before ordering such tests and normally only order such tests if I am concerned about what I am feeling during my examination.  It is rare I ask my patients to have such testing.  However, when a patient already has had a mammogram, I ask that they bring the films with them so I can use what I see on the films to better understand what I will be sculpting.  With my Dynamic Technique Male Chest Sculpture, I am able to contour the problem as it shows itself during surgery.

Grandpa Bambu,

  It has been 10 years since I was given steroids, but when I was injected, I was Overdosed, (265 injections in 9 months, use to weigh 150lb after OD 258lbs, SINCE 200lbs)!  After having man boobs for 10 plus years I figure they are a part of who I am, is that wrong?

Thanks for the advise Doctor, I was just worried, as I know women over 40 should have mamo's on a regular basis, does breast cancer run in families even on the male side, ( say Grandma, aunts, then maybe me???)?  By the way no lumps or pain or discharge.

Some men have higher risks of breast cancer such as those with Klinefelter's Syndrome.  For my patients with this problem, I recommend breast monitoring and possible mammograms.
