Well, the problem is that WE are the ones with gyne that didn't go away so obviously we have a strong opinion about this.  I am pretty sure that in most boys, it does go away, people here keep thinking that just because they don't see any of their friends with gyne means none of them ever had it.  When I was younger, I used to go visit some puberty websites online, and let me tell you, tons of people had gyne.  The reason you don't see a lot of people with it growing up is the same reason a lot of us here wore two t-shirts and never took our shirts off, people hide them.  I am fairly certain for the vast majority of people, it does go away on its own.  You can't just prescribe medication to young children because a small percentage of them will have a problem (non-health threatening) that won't resolve itself.  This is exactly what's wrong with the American health care system today, we are totally over medicated.

That being said, I think it is totally bizarre that there is not more research being done on drugs that can fix this problem when you catch it early enough.  I agree that if you have it for over a year or two, the doctor should try to prescribe something, especially when it's still tender.  I had painful gyne for a LONG time, I think at least 6-7 years.  It got better with time, but even in my 20s it would bother me sometime.  No one should have to live with that especially if there are non-invasive alternatives like drugs.  But do I think every kid who has gyne who walks into the doctor's office should get drugs or be recommended for surgery?  Absolutely no, that's just plain ridiculous.

While there are many who would herald the appearance of a drug capable of targeting breast tissue and causing it to shrink; I am not going to hold my breath while waiting.

I think that the most likely scenario would be for breast shrinkage to be be a novel side effect of a new drug being developed for something totally unrelated.

Rogain was in trials as a Blood Pressure Medication.

Propecia was developed for Prostate Enlargement.

Viagra was another Blood Pressure Medication.

Some excellent Smooth Muscle Relaxants actually started out to be Tranquilizers.

The list goes on, I think you get the idea.

Physicians who tell teenagers "don't worry son, it'll go away eventually." That's complete BS. Any adolescent with more than a lump under their nipple should be advised that in all likelihood it won't go away on its own and will develop into a psychologically debilitating condition known as gynecomastia. If the lumpy nipple persists for more than 3 months, the doctor should be prescribing anti-estrogen drugs to all adolescents who show signs of this condition. Sure, a few of those teens' gynecomastia might go away on its own, but the majority will not. Anti-estrogen drugs have proven in lab tests to eradicate gynecomastia in teens if caught early enough. If my physician had told me this I wouldn't be here, and neither would most of gyno.org's younger members. These drugs carry very little risk, and compared to the emotional and financial damages that would occur if this condition is allowed to persist, many parents and teens alike would most likely agree that the risk is worth it (if fully informed of the situation by the physician).

Another thing that pisses me off is health websites that say "boys, don't worry if you notice a little breast development while going through puberty, it is completely normal. You're not growing breasts, and it'll go away on its own". No, boys, it won't. You are growing breasts. Get help immediately. Talk to and endo, start saving for surgery, do SOMETHING. Just don't sit on your ass because trust me, after years of emotional torment and ~$5000 later, you'll regret listening to your "physician".

Well said dude!!!  ;)

yeah, i don't think that the doctors are wrong at all. In fact, even many plastic surgeons and specialists agree that gyne will go away 90% of the time in a couple of years (at least the cases caused by puberty and not fat build-up). It's just that we represent that 10% who got fucked...

Dude...

So what you are saying here is that if a sufferer has chest adipose (fatty) tissue it wasn't caused during puberty? I really don't know why everyone 'thinks' that if a guy has adipose tissue, then it's not Gynecomastia and it wasn't caused by pubescent hormonal fluctuations...

There are different types, severity if you will, of Gynecomastia... Some sufferers have gland only and some have a mix of gland and adipose tissue. It's all GYNECOMASTIA my friend!

The definition of the word Gynecomastia is:  Gyne (woman like) and Mastos (breasts)

The Doctors that tell boys in their early teens that it will resolve in time are not always right, but they are right in many cases.

However.... GP's tell only half of the story...

What GP's should be saying is...  "Well son, more than likely it will go away... however, there is a slight chance that it may not dissipate on its own. The latter case will involve surgical removal."

For some, GP's give false hope...  This, IMO, is not right...

GP's need to be educated!!!

i just went to the doctor with my mom for consultation. That f*cking doctor told me that it is very normal knowing that i'm just 19, he also told me that i have nothing to worry about my chest unless i'll let my friends touch the lump behind the nipple area of mine. I'm really mad with his assessment because he doesn't even know how i'm feeling and what gynecomastia really is.. I think it isn't normal for boys to have a pointy nipple and developed some gland behind it.. the doctor also told my parents that gynecomastia surgery is only done to sculp your body and for cosmetic purpose only.DAM* i hate them so much. It feels like nobody wants to believe me that's why this site is very good as an outlet for my emotion :(

Your Dr. is right about one thing, any condition that is so common is "Normal" in the statistical sense. Beyond that he is aparently not very well informed on the subject.

He did not seem to understant the emotional impact of the condition. It is possible that he actually believes that old BS about it "Going Away" if you just wait a couple of years.

You should see an Endocrinologist who specializes in developmental or reproductive problems. You'll get good concrete answers there.

A Psychologist may also be of help. Especially in dealing with the reluctance of your parents to accept the gravity of your feelings.

My own personal pet peeve is with many pediatricians who see youngsters with unmistakeable gynecomastia and just give them a pat on the shoulder and tell them "just wait it out....it will go away."  And it doesn't!!

I have tried to speak to many pediatricians in my local area.  The main thrust is that any young male, at puberty, whose gyne doesn't regress within two years, should be referred to a plastic surgeon for evaluation.  Young men should not be carried until the "magical" age of 18, when suddenly the pediatrician realizes that the gyne won't go away.  And that youngster has lost all those precious teen years -- working to hide his chest from view.

Add in the same general p referring you to a general surgeon AND parents who just don't care and at 54 years of age you have one very disturbed individual. Thanks system...you asked for what i'm going to dish out!
