What is the cost and waiting times of Private Surgery in the UK?

Hi guys,

I'm 26 and have been visiting this forum on and off now for the last 8 years. I have to say, I feel that Gynecomastia has frecked my life. As, I'm fast approaching 30, I dont want to spend the rest of time life like this. I would say my case is sever, and is similar to this guy's, maybe a bit more perkyer though

Does anyone know what the rough price is including all consoltations etc is for surgury is, I assume its between £4 - 5k?

Also, what about time scales, If I take my annual two weeks off work, could I have a consoltation with a Dr on the Monday, and go under on say Wednesday?

You are looking at £100 to £150 for a Consultation with a surgeon, that is a pretty standard amount wherever you go - however some places offer a free 'consult' which is usually with a nurse or sometimes even a sales person............ so watch out because you want to speak to a qualified plastic surgeon who knows what he is talking about.

Fees for the surgery are  about £3900 to £4500....  probably best to budget 5k by the time you have bought compression vests and paid any other travel costs or whatever.

Waiting time is going to depend on each surgeon.......... but going by my experience I would imagine you could have a consult and then get the surgery within a month if you were flexible about what time and date you wanted.

Thanks. I was trying to work out a budget last night and thought about £5 - £6k. I would proberly travel down to London (From Swansea) to Dr Kardis, as I've heard / read so much about him over the years.

I'm gonna set myself the goal, of lossing weight (about 3/4 stone) over say 9 months, and then get a loan, or whatever and get surgury done. My case isnt weight relates, been like it since I was at school.

I just want to walk around in a T Shirt, or wear a fitted shirt and feeling comfortable and not self concious. Withit out it clinging to my t1ts, or them sticking out, Is that too much to ask?!

The long and short of it is. Dr. Karidis is a very, very nice chap and gave me utmost confidence to have the procedure.

I have been putting it off for ten years, trying diet exercise etc. But I am no nearer being rich enough to get the surgery done so I just thought sod it. You only live once.

I went to Transform in Fulham to see Dr Nathan. NO THANK YOU! I didn't like his attitude and I was told by the clinic that 'I would help them meet their budget for the month and win them the monthly comission race' if I booked straight away. And a discount for cash.

I never asked about price or mentioned that it was an issue. I just wanted to be looked after and get a good result. It would have been £3500.


I then went to see Dr. Karidis. Perfect, they had a slot within a week, I closed my eyes and handed over my credit card!! £4300 all in.
I had the surgery yesterday. The hospital is like a hotel and the staff fantastic. I was out after 5 hrs and got a lift home. To be honest I could have taken a tube.

Today I am fine. Dont want to speak too soon, but havent even taken any pain killers yet and I am a wimp. Changed dressings myself and am very happy so far. (shave around your nipples before surgery!!!)


***TIP FOR EVERYONE*** before removing plasters after 24hrs, soak the bandage from the outside (only the adhesive areas, not the absorbant part) with alcohol hand sanitiser for 2 mins. they will peel off very easily



If you are travelling down, and on a budget, try the YHA hostel at St Pancrass. Only £48 for your own room. You can get the train home the next day.

Live your life now. Money is only a number.

Thats a good excerience. Can I ask how old are you?

Also, I dont know London at all. So if I were to travel down it would either be by car or train. As they advice not to use a car afterwards, I would catch a train.

Where exactly is the hosital? Name of it etc, and is it near any stations and hotels?

I dont mean to be stupid, but is it a private clinic or private by an NHS specialist. If its a private clinic, do they have a website / contact details?

Puffy Nipple Gynecomastia is an art form.

My UK patients with gynecomastia usually start out with our Preliminary Remote Discussion to minimize travel to Richmond. They then are seen the day before surgery for their confirmatory in office consultation, have surgery the next day, seen in the office the day after surgery and most travel back home that day. Some stay and vacation in the US until their dressing removal about 6 days after surgery. Time between the preliminary discussion and actual surgery does tend to vary. Cost of Gynecomastia Surgery depends on the problem to be treated. I see so many different types of gynecomastia one price would not be fair to all. Return to Work and Recovery depends on the problem to be treated, what needs to be done, Comfort After Surgery, and many other factors. Many of my patients are back to light activities and work the day after surgery. For almost all of my patients 2 weeks is more than enough time off of work.

It does help a bit.

But I would not have said that I am a case of puffy nipples. In the link I included above, if you look at the profile view, its the whole breast that sticks out, in a cone sort of way. I can feel gland, so its propberly a combination of gland and fatty tissue.

Anyway, what ever type, your right, I definately would want to see an experienced specialist, which is why I would rather pay for it, than take pot luck with the NHS. As for going abroad for surgery, I dont really know enought about the regulations in the US, but would rather have it done in the UK, as its still closer to home in case anything goes "breasts up" (excuse the pun)

I went under the knife with dr K on tues the 20th, so its still very early days for me but so far i have to say i am very happy. Im 31 and have had this condition for as long as i can remember and it began to really affect my life so i figured 'sod this'. Yes its a lot of money but that really pales into insignificance when you look at the bigger picture.

'what a relief' makes some very good points, basically if you have made your mind up to have the op then Dr. Karidis seems to be the main player, there are a few cheaper options out there but it really isnt worth the risk, you are dealing with your body here afterall.

The hospital is called 'the st john and st elizabeth hospital' and you can see it from the st johns wood underground station. What i did when i went for my initial consultation was get a train into London Euston then a couple of undergrounds to st johns wood ( you can do a planner online so u know where you are going etc)
