How many of you had the surgery or planning on having surgery by yourself ?
It seems like most doctors require someone to be with you after the surgery wheter or friend or hired nurse. I want to have it but not tell anyone.

Don't be silly. You need someone there to help you out and drive you.

Most outpatient clinics will straight up cancel your surgery if you do not have someone there to take you home. Someone that cares about you will want to help you. Girls have been really sweet to me. An ex-gf has been babyin' me the past few days. It's been a pleasurable experience :D.

Hi

I hired a nurse! She was waiting in the clinic when my surgery was done. We met the surgeon together. This is very smart as the surgeon most likely will give you extra personal details about your specific case and aftercare.

The nurse need to here these instructions as well! You might still feel the effects of the sedatives and miss something!

The nurse will follow you to your hotel and look after you for a couple of hours.
The next time I met my nurse was when I changed dressings and shower. (My nurse also told me that I could call her on her cell 24/7 if anything out of the ordinary should happen.
The last time I needed help was packing, change dressings again before flying home.

I hired the nurse for a total of 9 hours. She was great!

You will need help at home too. The compression garments can be tricky.

Same here.. I have my girl doing everything for me. I'm 9 weeks out and she is still taking care of me.

As someone who had surgery overseas I've done everything by myself. And was fine enough? Of course mine was done under a local anesthetic though. Just got a cab afterwards.

I did make sure I stocked the mini fridge of the Hotel/Motel I was staying at (with good healthy food) the day before surgery and camped out there for the week afterwards. Local takeaways including a Subway restaurant were just round the corner and I walked to that a couple times.

At this stage looks like I'm gonna have to do it all again too  :-\ Read my post in this thread for reference.

Ps. 9 weeks still need looking after? Haha ;)

You know it.. I got it made right now. I told my girl it may be six months before I'm "healed".

I just spoke with my nurse case manager this morning to go over the surgery day details, and she was very adamant that someone be there with me for a full 24hrs after surgery.  I live about 3 1/2 hrs away from where the surgery is being performed, so my wife is coming with me and driving me home afterwards...at least that was the plan.  I found out this morning that they do not even want me to be driven that far away right after surgery, and more or less have insisted that I stay at a local hotel overnight so the PS can see me the next day and give me the o.k to travel.  It's all for my own safety, so I understand.  It would be super tough to be alone though and have to do all this yourself.  I know how you feel about keeping this all as private as possible (it took me 12 years to say anything to my wife!), but in the end, if you can find anyone you trust enough with the secret, I think you will be way further off.  Good luck, hope all works out well!
Shakenbake baby, SHAKE N BAKE!!  Ya, that just happened.

The reason they want you to stay overnight is just in case you develop a hematoma. I had one right after surgery and then again the next day.

What did they have to do after you developed a hematoma?  Did they give any reason as to why this may have happened to you (especially twice!!)  May be good advice to know in case it is something all of us may be able to prevent, or at least prepare for.

The first one happened on my right side while I was in the recovering room. I was sent back into the surgery room about an hour later. After he drained it they simply wrapped me up and sent me home. Later that night/early morning I developed another hematoma on my left side. I called my ps and he told me come on in the next day. Again they drained it and sent me home. I thought I was good to go, but no the hematoma(left side) came back the next day. I went back a week later. This time my ps drained it and also put a drain in me. I had the drain for a week. After the drain was removed I was good to go. I had massive bleeding. Blood had traveled down to my love handles and down one of my arms. It took about 5-6 weeks for all the bruising to go away.

I believe the bleeding was my fault. I was told to stop all aspirin type meds and avoid alcohol two weeks before surgery. What did I do? I stopped taking advil one week before surgery and I did not stop drinking.

Dude... a drink or two on New Year's Eve, will not have any adverse affect for a surgery that is 12 days later...

Have a few and enjoy!!!
