For most men with gynecomastia, a mammogram is not necessary. In Walt's case, the findings definitely needed a mammogram just to be sure that everything was OK.
It is unfortunate that insurance companies frequently require a mammogram. The diagnosis of gynecomastia is made by physical exam. In my opinion, ANY excess tissue on a male chest should be termed gynecomastia. It is virtually always a combination of some ratio of gland and fat. Therefore, a mammogram to determine if there is gland tissue present is redundant and unnecessary. But unfortunately, insurance companies will go to any extreme to avoid paying for this surgery.
