What are the risks associated with surgery?

Hi, as the title of my post suggest, I am curious: what are the risks associated with gynecomastia surgery? I would just like to know what *could* go wrong even if it is unlikely anything will go wrong.

I use a standardized consent form that our national society generates which lists the most common complications,I believe its a word file you can call or email the office and someone can email you a copy. While complications are rare they can and do occur and should be seriously considered.

Here is a list of risks as noted in the American Society of Plastic Surgery brochures/website:

The risks include:

Unfavorable scarring
Bleeding (hematoma)
Blood clots
Infection
Poor wound healing
Changes in nipple or breast sensation may be temporary or permanent
If liposuction is used, additional risks include uneven contours, rippling or loose skin, irregular pigmentation, excessive fluid loss or fluid accumulation
Anesthesia risks
Breast contour and shape irregularities
Skin discoloration, permanent pigmentation changes, swelling and bruising
Damage to deeper structures – such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and lungs – can occur and may be temporary or permanent
Allergies to tape, suture materials, glues, blood products, topical preparations or injected agents
Breast asymmetry
Fatty tissue found deep in the skin might die (fat necrosis)
Fluid accumulation
Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
Pain, which may persist
Possibility of revisional surgery

It's always best to discuss these in detail with your surgeon prior to the procedure.
