When can you start swimming in a swimming pool after surgery?

If I were to get surgery in early April, about how long would it be best to wait before swimming in a pool?

And I mean strenuous swimming for working out, not just floating in the pool

The 4-6 weeks point seems to be the generally accepted time frame to return to exercise and then it's down to how you feel after that in terms of upping the intensity. I returned to weights after 4 weeks and went back to lifting what I was doing before surgery very quickly as I was pain free with no restriction in movement so I think the same would apply to swimming.
