A suitable UK surgeon

Hi all

I reckon I’ve likely got gynecomastia and after seeing a TV programme one night on the problem decided to look around the internet, just to see what info is out there about it – hence my reading this site. I was really surprised to see just how common a problem it is and the different levels of severity in blokes!

I’m in the UK and would seriously consider having surgery done to help correct the problem.

The surgeon who seems to appear most popular in the UK is Mr Levick – some have found him good and some not! (just can’t please everybody I guess?)

Anyhow, I’ve started the ball rolling and will be calling in with my GP this week to get his advice. In parallel with this I’m searching around for surgeons other than Mr Levick. I’ve found a guy in Brighton called Andrew Yelland via the BUPA website (see http://www.andrewyelland.com) who specialises in gynecomastica and was wondering if anyone has knowledge of this surgeon or experience with him?  

Any feedback is much appreciated as I want to make a reasonably informed decision before if I go ahead to spend my money on surgery!

Hi Redfox,

I think its unlikely that you will get any feedback for him here as most people do seem to go to Leivck or more recently Poland. I have been visiting these forums for about 18 months now and you will seldom see any other surgeons discussed.

I think it is highly likely that their are many skilled surgeons out their who are very capable of producing great results. They all seem to go under the radar though.

I think you are doing the wise thing and should seek out more than one opinion. Let us know how you go, as it would be far better if their were more surgeons capable to choose from.

I’ve been reading your story with interest since I began looking at these boards around two months ago. I have to say your chest looks very normal to me – if I had that degree of flatness I’d be running around with my shirt off in all this good weather!

Yes, I’m trying to approach this as sensibly as I can. The first port of call is my GP (just to get his take on things). I could also do with toning up/losing some fat and have just started to do some gym work (will also get my %age body fat measured etc.. just to see how I rate. It’s also important when thinking about diet/food intake for weight training).

I’m about 182 lbs and just shy of 6 ft which places me at the bottom of the ‘overweight’ category (which is nice to know!) - it’ll be interesting to see if gym work will help my situation. I’m told I don’t look fat but I do have a little bit of ‘tud’ around the stomach (the joys of being on the wrong side of 35 but still the right side of 40!!). My chest does feel fatty and sags a bit – if gym work and proper diet tightens everything up I’ll be very happy! We’ll see what the GP says first and if he agrees that even with diet/training I’ll still have a problem then I’m off to visit a surgeon. This is where the hassle will likely start, many surgeons purport to do this work but who is best to use?? Andrew Yelland’s web site looks professional but I’d need more than that - I’ll have a lot of questions for whoever might end up doing the job! In any event I’ll still focus on the gym work as it would appear from all I’ve read that correct body weight is important before any surgeon will perform an op.

I’ll get around soon to posting some shots of my chest just to get a feel for what people think and will try to keep posting on how things are progressing.

As stonecold says, see as many consultants as you feel necessary.  A nice website does not equate to a nice chest.

When you go for your initial consultations, ask to see before and after pictures of past patients.  If they don't have any to hand, be suspicious.

Once they have examined you, ask them what they think is a reasonable expectation.  Ask how many operations of this kind they do each year and how often patients come back seeking revision.  Also, if revision is needed, will there be in additional costs involved.  Some charge, some don't, some charge theatre fees only for revision.
