scared on the going to sleep part!

im going to be booking a consultation with karidis ASAP

the procedure, being cut open etc etc does not worry me at all, but the idea of being put to sleep frightens me to death. i could almost imagine myself having a panic attack moments before!

would he do the operation with local anesthetic? i have seen a few videos of a well known america surgeon doing the procedure usng local anesthetic and the patient full awake throughout.

has anyone else suggested this to karidis or requested it and wat did he say.   its the only thing stopping me getting this problem sorted

im 19 stone and 6ft 2  been weight training for 7 years so im a big guy and this makes me worry even more cause the heavier you are the more risks at being put to sleep... apparently

i certainly would rather be asleep than be awake for this kind of thing but we are all different. you just nod off one minute and the next thing you are recovering in the treatment room. i wouldnt let this stop you going through with it

Rather you than me....... I would choose the going to sleep option over local anesthetic any day of the week............. I have to go to the dentist next week to have a cracked tooth sorted (don't chew plastic folks), and I would have a general anesthetic for that if I could!   

Anyhow, obviously the risk of going under is greater if you are overweight or obese (although it sounds like you are more of a bodybuilder than a fatty?)...... I'm 6ft 5.5 ish and a similar weight and I have had about 12 operations no problems.   The risk of death is ridiculously small, and my guess is that those who do have complications almost certainly have other health problems which complicate matters.

As for having a panic attack.... well maybe,  I know when I am laying on the bed and the anaesthetist is starting to put the cannula in time seems to stand still and my heart is beating about 150bpm!    But it only lasts about 2mins - then it is sleepy time.

Nothing to worry about really, it is just another day in the office for the medical staff.

Unless you have puffy nipples, even a masochist won't cope with full on breast tissue removal with a scalpel and full on lipo that lasts for 90 mins+

I've had pre-med sedation and local and had the muscle cut out of my leg when I was wide awake. It was extremely painful and something I do not want to ever repeat. I had to do this for medical reasons. Local numbs the area, however the surrounding tissue you can still feel it, thus Lipo would never been pain free - never mind someone taking a knife to the breast tissue. You will always feel sharp jolts and tugging and pulling during surgery, unfortunately.

Some men report back they are tough and manly during and after the operation and don't need a general anesthesia. Great, but on reviewing their before/after shots - they do not have large male breasts, so their surgery is minimal.

Comparing a lengthy surgical procedure with tiny little 'bitch breasts' and no local anesthesia (I saw the youtube video) is not realistic.
If you don't want general anesthesia, you can have local with IV sedation - mild or heavy.

Possibly as an altenative if you want to remain awake,  at a stretch if you could cope with the experience, a surgical team may allow you to have a pre-op amount of Vallium (10mg) and local with the agreement if the pain is too much they turn the IV tap on for sedation. This wouldn't scare you as much, as you would know the sedation is not a general anesthesia.

Local with sedation is safer than a general and a good compromise for what you're looking for in my opinion.

I am totally understanding of your fears, as I am in your predicament for medical as well as psychological reasons.
I am most envious of healthy people who can 'grin and bear it' as they are not reactive against general anesthetics and can be brave and take it in their stride.

A large part of the fear, is trust.

i was scared too about the 'going to sleep' part, but karidis has a qualified anaesthesia specialist during the whole op. the anaesthesia guy even came to speak to me before the op to reassure me and told me that all the stories floating around are nonsense and its as safe as it gets. there are at least 4 doctors / nurses that will be in the operation room with you so that should make you feel safe. karidis is a very thorough man and you should feel safe with him. he is the best in the business so you can be assured your in safe hands.

You will be perfectly fine, i thought i was going to be kept awake and that scared me to death, i was over the moon when he said he was putting me to sleep. Thousands of people get put to sleep for operations everyday so dont worry, they no what they are doing!
