Day 19/120

Back at 200! Will post pics once under it. Weight loss might slow down due to increasing daily carb intake (not enough carbs to be training at the intensity required at BJJ). Talking and flirting (at least trying) with more girls. Still havent had a chance to ask that asian girl out. I am feeling pretty good all around regardless.
Everyone have a great weekend!

Hi, good to see things are good, sorry I haven't posted in ages, been in denial a bit and have avoided this site! Notice you haven't posted for a while so hope you update soon. Would like to see how things are going for you.

Update: Gained 32 pounds at 232 now. Quit training. I am trying to figure out why i do this and what i need to do to or face to change this. Or even what "this" exactly means.

I will try again. I have renewed hope. I have some more reason to do this for myself now. Maybe it will make the difference.

  • You t*t, what's he gonna do nibble your bum?
I can't remember where I heard this, but it has really helped me through my exercise and diet routine when I am feeling a little less motivated.  The quote is "it is far better to do a little a lot, rather that a lot a little".

For 20 years I have fought the weight fight too, averaging about 235lbs on my 5'11" frame.  Every year or two I would kick my ass with diet and exercise, lose twenty or thirty pounds, and then lose my motivation.  I would do way too much, obsess over diet, hit the gym for too long, for too many days a week.

Now I still have those highly motivated times, but even when I don't, I try and do a little.  In stead of going to the gym for 2hrs, I will go for 30min.  Doing a little every day has saved me from those big weight gains.

Helped for me, just thought I would pass it along.  Good Luck.

yeah that sounds like my problem. how are you doing with it now? (i am 232.8 lbs and 6'0) Thanks for the advice. I will try to incorporate that idea.

Congrats on surgery and recovery! Your story inspired me. I think i might consider Dr. Jacobs as well.

Right now I am about 205 give or take a couple. A little heavier, about 10 pounds, than I want to be, but I lift regularly and have added some good muscle.

That little idea really does work.  I strive for long intense workouts, but I find that if I do just a little everyday it keeps me on track.

Jacobs is a good choice.  Best thing about using him is the piece of mind that you don't have to wonder if you made the wrong choice on docs.  You pay for it, but I found it to be worth it.

Keep it up, best of luck.

He's right.  Going to the gym for sessions of 2 hours + is not only overtraining, but unsustainable over a long period of time.  Only professional, genetically gifted, drug using bodybuilders can maintain that sort of work level day in day out, over the months and years.

I have bouts of motivated times where I can do two hour workouts, but they are not sustainable.

Plus, having the idea of going to the gym for more than an hour is daunting and not always possible.  However to slip in 30 or 40 minutes is doable, and helps keep me from big weight gains.

Plus you just feel better when you are doing even a little exercise.

Motivation is the hardest mistress. She's fickle. I try associating my gyne with shame and pain. When I go to the refigerator to eat a bad food, I associate it with more pain. When I eat a burger/fries/coke, they no longer taste good to me. When I think about going to the beach, and taking off my shirt, I associate it with shame.

It sounds like you are attracted to hot women. Use this as a powerful motivator. Don't be shy, smile broadly and practice talking to them at the gym. Try talking slowly and deliberately as if your words were important. Keep a diet and fitness journal and write down not only what you did, but how you felt. Re-read what you wrote a few days later. When you do eat something bad, eat only a tiny bit, and then force yourself to wait for a long time before eating another mouthful. You'll tire of eating junk especially when the ladies start noticing you in the gym. Women hate men who oogle them in the gym. They just want to workout. Make sincere eye contact and be Mr. Friendly and Helpful. It will pay off, and keep you motivated.

Get some tight wife beaters, and wear them to boost your morale. When you manage to get through a couple of weeks of solid workouts, buy yourself some new clothing that looks flattering and enhances your new physique.

You do not have the strength to do this on your own. There are no non-believers in foxholes during wartime. You're in a battle too. Pray and ask for strength and power and determination.

Finally here's three things that really help me. You may think they're stupid. Who cares? They work.

1. Grunt like hell when you really lift. Work at it man! Get ripped! Draw down on your animal power. You're a warrior inside.
2. Find a power word to say while lifting or doing cardio. I started with no stamina at all. When I'm 1/3 of the way through a tough 5000 meter row, I say, "IRON". I imagine myself as soft iron, heavy and malleable, potentially strong. When 2/3 of the way through I say, "FORGED". I am in a furnace, and my iron is being tested, and metamorping into something new and harder and tougher. Finally in the final minutes of my row I say, "STEEL". I am razor sharp, a sword of power, strong and able to cut through my weakness.

You got to reach deep and make yourself go go go. The enemy is the SELF: the weak shadow side of us that is lazy, makes excuses, and wants the short term things that give immediate pleasure. You got to re-wire your brain to succeed.

i bought a Wii fit. Its pretty cool, i am actually sore from using it. I played for 2 hours for 2 days now. Its helping me build my core (yoga, calisthenics and balancing games). I especially like that i can play it right after a big meal and feel better. I am really meditating on my sense of urgency with weight loss. I go from eating right and exercising lots to doing nothing and eating like crap. Its too extreme. I need to relax and not rush myself. Small changes! I keep reading that over and over again in weight loss success stories. Some more self honesty and prayer are also in order as well as some more detachment from what others think (like Pragmatic has). I think a big part of this is not being okay with myself right now. I am trying to face the lies of inferiority/superiority i have been telling myself and see myself in truth and then accepting that truth and moving forward at a pace i can handle and be happy about. Thanks for all your posts. We are closer to each other because of our shared pain. I love all of you (even if its only because i can feel your pain) even those just reading the forums and have yet to post. May God give us courage and wisdom to do what we need to.

It's good that you're processing this. No great construction is built in great waves, it's methodical and slow. Rather than falling off the wagon, take a little break once a week. Allow yourself a burger, just don't eat all the crap that they put on it. Allow yourself a handfull of potato chips. Drink a shot of whiskey...toast your success!

...but stay focused and in control. It's not the haters and laughers that are the enemy. It's our loss of self control. We've been dealt a bad hand. Do what ever you can to improve your lot. You may end up using surgery, but in the mean time, build yourself up: mind, body, and spirit.

Go go go and never look back. Each day in a new opportunity for change.
