ok so i went to the doc for the first time a few weeks ago, and he sent me to a endocrinologist. Just seen him yesterday, and i told him that i do drink enough beer, but i have had this problem my whole life, and he said he thinks they are caused from alcohol? I dont think so, im sure its not helping, but anyway he is sending me to the hospital for blood work and a ultrasound? Should i just go straight to a PS? im sick of all these co pays when i know i have a bad case of G. I asked the endocrinologist if the surgery would be paid for and he said its 50/50. Depending on if he sends in a letter saying its causing social problems and what not.. I would think the PS would be the one sending in the letter not the Endo?  Thanks for any thoughts

Having submitted many claims for gynecomastia patients to insurance companies, I can tell you your best shot is to have the endocrinologist write a letter as to your needing the surgery.  The reason is, insurance companies do not trust plastic surgeons as much because they have an interest in performing the surgery, whereas the endocrinologist does not.

Having lab work is a good idea if your doctor requires it.  However, even with a letter it is unlikely you will be able to have the procedure covered unless your gynecomastia is very significant.

Agree with Dr. Cruise

Insurance very rarely covers gyne surgery unless there is proof of endocrine abnormalities.  Letters from your endo doctor, your plastic surgeon, and probably a mental health professional (attesting to the emotional impact of your gyne) are ALL necessary -- and even then the vast majority of claims are dismissed by the all-powerful insurance companies.

Good luck.

ugh.. why cant it just be covered.. Im so sick of dealing with these dang things.. So i called the hospital on friday to reschedule my appt to monday. The nurse i talked to was like "you are coming in to have a blood work and a ultrasound on .................. your breasts?" Ya pretty embarrasing, i dont even wanna get the ultrasound because i have to take my shirt off infront of somebody.. i would rather just have the blood work. Im gunna post a picture up here in a few, let me know what you guys think? The endocrin was feeling my nipple and said there was a good amount, i remember him saying like 3 or 4 cm if that makes any sense to you guys.

A couple of years ago we heard from a mother who managed to get the insurance to cover the cost of surgery based upon a letter from a Psychologist who asserted that the gynecomastia was causing emotional problems including social isolation.
