The first recorded use of the word Gynecomastia was by the Greek Physician Galen in the second century.

He used the term to describe mens breasts if they were contoured and rounded like a womans breasts. If a man had breasts such as that today, without significant development of the nipple/areola lots of people would call it pseudo Gynecomastia. it would be the only type though which would fit Galen's description.

What people today are calling true Gynecomastia, Galen ignored. Apparently puffy nipples were so common that Galen ignored them entirely.

I am amused when people try to use the terms in their modern usage without knowing that the use of the terminology has changed of time.

Regardless, does it really make any difference what you, I or someone else may call it?

Gynecomastia is harmless in itself, at least physically. The bad effects are entirely psychological and emotional.

There are many who live with the condition and pay no attention to it.

There are others who accept their condition, some even like it.

Most find it embarrassing at some level and at some time in their life, here we find common ground.

If you have not already done so, there is still time for a kind word with your Dad.

Forgive an old mans ramblings,

Happy Fathers day.
