Hello, I'm an obvious new guy here, so I thought I should say:

Sorry if I break any rules here. Anyways, I was wondering if any of you had any tips for getting surgery covered by insurance.

Now for some backstory. I'm 16 and not interested in waiting  a few more years for my gyne to leave me. Mostly because I'm confident that it won't go away - I've had these manboobs since sixth grade; when I was twelve. It's not pseudogyne either, because I didn't really gain weight until around two years ago.  Then, over the course of last month, I lost about twenty lbs. The moobs didn't budge.

My parents are okay with surgery, but said that they wouldn't pay for it. My dad has me covered on Aetna an I'd like to have them cover a gyne surgery so I can finally feel normal while wearing a T-shirt.

To get insurance to cover the surgery, the condition has to first be serious/deforming and be mostly glandular and not fat.  Then you need to document pain and suffering through your primary doctor, endocrinologist and a surgeon.

Then be prepared to appeal a couple of times and continue to demonstrate tenderness, pain and other discomfort.  And even then it is not likely they'll approve.  Most people would just choose to shell out the $4000-6000 in the end.  But if that's not an option, then give it a shot.

Most medical plans will cover the cost of Psychological counseling. If you are having trouble socializing, have serious issues regarding self image, Shyness etc. then the Psychologist may be able to make the case that surgery would cure your Psychological problems.

As previously noted, be prepared for an appeal as many insurance companies routinely deny coverage initially.
