Having to ask your parents for a ride from the Hospital after surgery.

Hey everyone, I have been a long time Gyno sufferer from the ages of 13 to my current age of 26. I have saved enough money for surgery with Dr Fielding in Toronto. I had a consultation today and I am booked for surgery on June 4th, for a total cost of $2800. They said that I would not be able to drive myself home from the Hospital and would need a ride back home from someone else.

The one problem is I have not told anybody, not even my family. I was hoping to keep this whole surgery to myself for obvious reasons. How do I bring up the issue to my family to ask for a ride?

I just had my surgery with Dr.Fielding last week. I would very much suggest that you have someone with you the entire day of the surgery. To bring you there and drive you back and potentially care for you the night of and the morning after.

Im sure your parents would be very supportive of the situation if you explained to them the situation, what gynocomastia is, how it makes you feel, and how simple the procedure is going to be. My parents and close friends are the only people I told about the surgery. My other family members think I got a benign growth removed from my chest, and I almost feel confident enough to tell them the truth. Its nothing to be embarrassed about, it grew on you from something beyond your control (I assume).

The surgery is nothing major and I am currently 6 days post op and have almost zero pain.

Talk to your parents, It helps to have someone who cares about you there for a day or two post op.

Hey! Thanks for posting man! There is not enough people posting about the thoughts or experiences with Dr.Fielding.  Good luck with your results and I'm sure they will look great! I feel your pain about wanting to keep the surgery as private as possible, away from the knowledge of friends and family. For my upcoming surgery with Dr. Mustoe in Chicago, I will be driving into the city. Even though the procedure will be performed under local anesthesia, the doctor wouldn't let me take any chances of driving back by myself. My father lives in the area but I would rather pay the cost of staying in a hotel than having my dad pick me up post-operation.

The upside is that some hotels may offer discounts with nearby physicians/hospitals, which happened in my situation. That discount definitely swayed me in deciding to keep the surgery to myself. Another upside is that since my hotel is within a block of the doctor's office, one of his nurses will simply escort me there and check me in. Not advocating that people have to cut out their family/friends from knowing about this process, but this is just my personal viewpoint on the matter and how I "solved" the problem of what happens post-op. 

Not sure what decision you went with, nb89, but I wish you the best recovery! Hope you are able to update us on your progress. I'm scheduled for July 14; that day can't come quickly enough!
