Permanent Stitches??

My Dr. wants to use permanent stitches around the nipple, like women get with a masectomy. Is this normal/expected? or should I request a different procedure? I don't know if permanent stitches is a good idea.

Most of the time permanent stitches are used when performing a purse-string closure around the edge of the nipple.  This is commonly done when there is lax skin of the chest.

Most of the time, when appropriate removal of gyne is performed, the skin will spontaneously tighten (sometimes remarkably so), making the need for a purse-string suture unlikely.  Sometimes surgeons who have not performed many gyne procedures will anticipate the need for a purse-string suture when it may not be necessary.  In my experience performing thousands of gyne procedures, I have not once needed a purse-string suture.

You might be best served by seeking the opinion of a gyne specialist in your area.

Thank you. I didn't have much time and with my insurance it would be difficult to find a gyne specialist, so went ahead with the purse-string procedure. Are there any methods to reduce or prevent internal scar tissue from forming?
