A couple of time I accidentally purchased bras with plastic side ribbing sewn in. It's extremely uncomfortable and the edges dig into the skin.

I'm wearing one now!

I actually cut one end of the ribbing and slide the plastic out resewing up the hole.

It makes a good bra out of one you would never want to wear.

I like side ribbing myself. It's gives extra side support and shaping. Height of the ribbing is important though.

Better quality bras may use more flexible ribbing. For me the ribbing smooths the sides and gets more of my breast tissue into the cups were it can be properly supported. Ribbing and a  deeper underband are pretty much essential for me.

The bra I'm wearing today has side boning.  This one is a great fit and I have no issues with side poking.  I will say the bra style, ones body shape and size all contribute to the comfort of bra.  With or without side boning.

My needs exactly
I’ve a lot of east-west going on & very wide base breasts … it feels great when it’s all in the cups and out of the armpits
Love an underwire with high side panels
Will start looking for boning/ support in new bras, suggestions?

There are bras with a flexible plastic piece for the boning and some that have a taller side seam boning.  A quick look at Her Room and adding the filter of Boning the search came up with 255 bras.  I noticed that didn't include the tall side seam boning.  Makes it hard to say what will fit you.  I do have this one and the description does say it's good for east west and has the side seam boning.  It's a nice fit for me and very comfortable.  Happy looking. And do try some on.

Parity, that's a really nice looking bra. The only question I have, is that if it is already an underwire bra, why is side boning necessary? The underwire enables 'swoop and scoop' to eliminate side boob and also keeps the band fully upright.

I can see the sense of side boning in a wire-free bra to keep the band from scrunching though. Here is a bra that I have had some experience with.😉  It is a sturdy retro-looking garment, and the construction of the frame makes it almost as supportive as an underwire bra, but without the boning the band would be prone to scrunching: Fayreform Rigid Soft Cup Wire Free Bra Nude | Bendon Lingerie
