How can you tell if your gland is pushing it out or if its something else?

Speaking personally, I always thought my gynaecomastia was mainly fatty.  Despite no change in size or shape of my chest since losing 60lbs (4 stones or 25kg) to get to an 'ideal' weight, I still thought it was fat rather than gland because it feels soft and not hard or firm as is often the case.

After a consultation with a leading UK plastic surgeon, he told me to pinch and feel the breast area and then compare it to fat on my waist.  The breast tissue felt soft, but 'nodular' kind of like soft gristle.  The fat on my waist is much 'smoother' by comparison.  This means that my chest area is mostly glandular or breast tissue.  So it can be hard to tell if you don't know what you are feeling for.
